This is the most spectacular road in Morocco, and you earn it. The Tizi n'Tichka crosses the High Atlas at 2,260 metres through a series of hairpins cut into the rock, with viewpoints reaching fifty kilometres. Photo stops along the way, and a break at an argan oil and saffron cooperative.
On the far side of the pass the landscape flips in an instant: pines give way to ochre earth, palm groves and kasbahs. First stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified mud-brick ksar clinging to its hillside and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. You cross the river and climb to the communal granary at the top of the village — the view over the valley is striking. The place has stood in for scenery in Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones.
Lunch on a terrace facing the ksar, then on to Ouarzazate. You visit the Taourirt kasbah, once the residence of the Glaoui pasha, and pass the Atlas Studios, the largest film studios in the world by surface area.
Back to Marrakech over the same pass at the end of the day. A long day, but an unforgettable one.
